An annual boiler service costs from £80 + VAT and keeps your boiler safe, efficient and within its manufacturer warranty. A Gas Safe registered engineer inspects and cleans the boiler, checks the gas pressure and tests the flue gases. Servicing catches small problems early, before they become a breakdown.
Most people only think about their boiler when it stops working, usually on the coldest morning of the year. In more than 12 years at British Gas, first as a technical engineer and then managing engineers, I saw that a yearly service is the easiest way to keep your boiler safe, working well and covered by its warranty. Here's what it involves and why it's worth doing.
Why a Yearly Service Matters
A boiler burns gas in your home every day it runs. Over the course of a year, parts wear, dirt builds up and seals can deteriorate. None of that is unusual, but it does need checking.
- Safety: A service checks that your boiler is burning gas safely and that the flue is getting rid of the fumes properly.
- Efficiency: A clean, properly set up boiler does its job without working harder than it needs to.
- Fewer breakdowns: Servicing catches small problems early, before they turn into a breakdown and a repair bill.
- Your warranty: Manufacturers usually expect the boiler to be serviced every year to keep the warranty valid.
What Happens During a Service
A service is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer and takes around an hour for most boilers. Here's what we do.
- Inspect the boiler: We check the boiler and its connections for signs of wear, damage or leaks.
- Clean it: We open the boiler up and clean the parts that need it, so it can run as it should.
- Check the gas pressure: We make sure the boiler is getting the right gas pressure to work safely and properly.
- Test the flue gases: Using a flue gas analyser, we check the boiler is burning cleanly and the fumes are being carried away safely.
- Talk you through it: If we find anything that needs attention, we explain it in plain English and tell you whether it needs doing now or can wait.

Call to Book a ServiceServicing and Your Warranty
If your boiler is still under its manufacturer warranty, a yearly service is normally a condition of keeping it. Miss a service and a manufacturer may refuse a claim, which could leave you paying for a repair that should have been covered.
It's worth checking the terms that came with your boiler and keeping a record of every service. If you're not sure what your warranty needs, ask us when we come out and we'll help you check.
What a Service Costs
We keep our pricing simple.
- Standard service: £80 + VAT. This is what most boilers need each year.
- Major service: £120 + VAT plus parts. This is for boilers that need more than a standard service.
We'll tell you which one your boiler needs before we start, so you know the cost up front.
Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Book
Your boiler works hardest through the winter. Booking a service in autumn means any problems are found and fixed before you're relying on the heating every day, rather than in the middle of a cold snap.
It also means you're not trying to find an engineer at the same time as everyone else whose boiler has packed up. If you've missed autumn, don't worry: a service at any time of year is far better than none.
